Explanation of Ultralight:

For a beginner, using light line is key to trigger the most amount of bites possible and learn what subtle bites really feel like. A monofilament line in the 4 – 8lb test range is ideal. Remember if you want to worry less about breaking your line, heavier lb test line (8lb) is better, but the line is also thicker in diameter allowing the fish to detect it more. Lighter line will often trigger more bites because it is thinner in diameter, however, that thinner diameter line is more susceptible to breaking if you’re fishing in areas with a lot of cover (like underwater wood, concrete, rocks, etc). As you get more advanced I always recommend a 2lb test line for ultralight to produce maximum bites and catch most amount of fish, but this line requires you to set your drag on your reel correctly, know how to set the hook properly, and know how to fight a bigger fish out of cover with a light line.

Rods should be between 5.6” and 7’ long. Something to consider is longer rods will allow you more casting distance, however, most beginner fishalots will fish from the bank where you will have to deal with overhanging trees, brush, and less than ideal access points to the bank where a shorter rod can be beneficial for casting in close quarters with trees and brush.

Ultralight fishing will be in all three sections because no matter how advanced you become at fishing, Ultralight will always remain as one of the best ways to trigger the toughest bites and works for a huge variety of fish. As you get more advanced in fishing, often times fishalots will use ultralight tactics to catch bait and move their way up the food chain to catch much bigger fish. You can see this in action on my channel in a number of videos.

SALTWATER

I will primarily focus on saltwater fishing rods with these recommendations as rods built for saltwater tend to be more versatile than rods with only freshwater applications in mind. A saltwater rod is typically built with far more attention paid to corrosion resistance which is key in any fishing situation and although you should always hose your rods off when you get home from fishing, having corrosion resistance built straight into your rod can save you a lot of money. Additionally, freshwater does have salt in it and if that pond, lake, river, etc fresh water sits on your rods/reels you can also get corrosion or rust built up on your gear. Therefore, I always recommend saltwater tried and tested gear for beginners and intermediate fishalots out there. As for the Surf recommendations, you should always start with a manageable rod size. You will see a lot of people on the beach with rods that are just too long for their comfort zone and they cannot manage the length of the rod when casting and pairing their baits and weights. I’d recommend starting with about an 8ft rod if you want to surf fish, that rod length is ideal for beginner surf fishing and that size rod can be used in other bank fishing scenarios in your local lakes, ponds, and rivers. As you get more experienced, I’d recommend looking at longer rods to help you cast in really windy or harsh weather conditions.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL FISHING GEAR

This section will focus on fishing gear meant for anglers who have moved beyond the basics of fishing and will need the gear to match their experience level. At this stage, fishalots have a solid understanding of fundamental techniques and concepts but are still developing advanced skills and expanding their knowledge. Intermediate anglers are no longer relying on trial and error as much—they’ve gained confidence through experience. However, they are still learning and eager to refine advanced techniques, explore new styles of fishing (e.g., surf fishing, kayak fishing, exploring as many new bodies of water as possible), and target more challenging fish species.

This stage is about growth and exploration and while still budget-conscious, these fishalots will be interested in investing in more specialized gear, such as finesse rods, high-performance reels, and more technique specific lures.

Reels

This section discussed rods and reels for the intermediate fishalot. I am always a huge fan of extremely versatile gear that I can use anywhere for any fish in both freshwater and saltwater environments. With that said, saltwater fishing rods and reels are more versatile for both environments because they are specifically designed to handle the harsher conditions, especially involving exposure to salt and corrosion resistance. This makes saltwater rods and reels well-suited for freshwater use as well, meaning if you are looking to save money and buy a rod and reel that can be used for a multitude of fish then it might be worth looking at saltwater rods and reels that can also meat you freshwater needs. You can see this in action on my channel where I am using extremely versatile gear for all sorts of fish in all sorts of environments.

Lures

Bucktails

Again, this can really be a staple of any fishalots arsenal out there and will apply to all these levels of fishing, but now advancing from the beginner stage, bucktails can be paired with a variety of different trailers. Additionally, at this point you can also stock your tackle with a variety of different weights and profiles of bucktails. Here’s a few good options for different bucktail brands:

Surface and Subsurface Lures

Surface and subsurface lures are must-haves for fishalots targeting aggressive, predatory fish in both freshwater and saltwater environments. Surface lures, like poppers and walking baits, create a thrilling topwater action, drawing explosive strikes from fish as they mimic injured prey. Subsurface lures, such as jerkbaits and shallow-diving crankbaits, operate just below the surface, imitating baitfish with realistic swimming motions. Together, these lures are ideal for covering different water columns and triggering reactions from active fish feeding near the surface and do require some practice and patience to master. Surface and subsurface lures stand out for their versatility and ability to create exciting fishing moments. Unlike deep-diving lures or bottom jigs, these are perfect for targeting fish in shallow zones or during times of active feeding. For anglers looking to expand their lure selection, these are essential tools for success.

Freshwater

Chatterbaits

Chatterbaits are a staple in the arsenal of intermediate anglers looking to refine their ability to target bass and other predatory fish. These bladed jigs deliver a combination of vibration, flash, and lifelike movement, making them perfect for enticing reaction strikes or even triggering finicky bites in a variety of situations. Their versatility allows you to fish them effectively in open water, low in the water column, high in the water column, around vegetation, or along structure. For anglers who want to up their game, chatterbaits offer a unique way to cover water quickly and efficiently while mimicking the look and action of distressed prey, allowing you to find fish much more efficiently. Here are some of my favorite chatterbaits (though there are many MANY more varieties out there).

Spinnerbaits

Spinnerbaits are a time-tested favorite for both beginner and intermediate anglers targeting bass and other game fish. The reason why I wanted to include them here in this section is because with all the new shiny new lures out there that become fishing fad, people seem to be fishing with spinner baits less and less, which is a huge mistake. Spinnerbaits unique design combines flash, vibration, and a weed-resistant build, making them effective in a wide range of conditions year round. Mastering the use of spinnerbaits will allow you to not only find fish far more efficiently, but also catch a lot more fish far more efficiently, especially if other fishalots are all using the new “fad” baits. Whether you’re fishing murky water, working around vegetation, or searching for active fish, spinnerbaits excel at triggering strikes. With customizable blade types (willow, Colorado, Indiana, etc), they can mimic baitfish, create turbulence, or adapt to various water clarities and depths. Their versatility cannot be understated and that makes them a go-to lure for anglers looking to refine their fish catching techniques. Here’s some spinnerbait options I enjoy fishing with:

Crankbaits

Crankbaits are essential for intermediate fishalots looking to cover water quickly and target fish at specific depths. These versatile lures are designed to mimic baitfish or crawfish, making them ideal for triggering predatory strikes. With a range of diving depths, from shallow to deep, crankbaits excel at reaching fish in open water, around structures, along drop-offs, or in deep water. Their realistic wobbling action, coupled with vibrant color patterns, makes them a reliable choice for enticing bites from any fish. Of course the size and depth of your crankbaits and saltwater plugs will vary depending on the fish you are after (a striped bass vs a largemouth bass)

Wacky Worm Rigs and Setups

Wacky worm rigs are a must-have for intermediate anglers looking to perfect their finesse fishing techniques. This simple yet effective setup involves hooking a soft plastic worm through the middle of the worm, creating a unique fluttering action as it sinks. Ideal for targeting bass in pressured environments, the wacky rig is perfect for coaxing bites from finicky fish. You can fish this lure with finesse or use it as a search bait moving along the water with fast twitching motions to move it more horizontally. You can even fish this just under the surface to trigger reaction bites or draw fish out to strike. Pair it with a thick hook to avoid ripping the worm and heavy hook for getting the lure to depth and lighter hook to slow down its sink rate.

You can also use a nail weight to adjust the fall rate and reach deeper strike zones, however, keep in mind by just selecting the right brand of worm can greatly affect where you are fishing in the water column. Yamamoto baits are heavily salted and will sink at a faster covering deeper depths while a yum dinger will be more buoyant (less salted) and a Zoom Trick Worm will most likely be best for top water fishing, because it tends to be most buoyant. Wherever you are fishing, the wacky worm is an incredibly versatile and natural presentation that makes it a go-to setup for anglers honing their skills.

GENERAL FISHING GEAR FOR EVERYONE

This section covers a large area of super useful items to consider depending on your fishing situation. Many of the items below will be useful for bank fishing, kayak fishing, boat fishing, or fishing from beaches and jetties.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ANYONE ADVANCED OR BEGINNER,

LIFE JACKETS

My recommendation for life jackets includes an advance Type V Personal Floatation Device (PFD) the Mustang Survival PFD, and less expensive type V PFD the Absolute Outdoor, and a children’s PFD a US Coast Guard approved type III vest. The reason why I so strongly recommend a Type V PFD is because these PFD’s are designed to allow you to move around and fish without any interference. In most cases where I am using my Mustang I don’t even notice I’m wearing it! And if you do end up in an unfortunate situation (in the water), there is no sense stowing your life jackets because then its simply too late. Safety is first and foremost whether you on a jetty, a kayak, or a boat wearing the PFDs could literally mean the difference between life and death. Please be careful out there fishalots! And please where your PFDs.

RAIN GEAR

When I first went to work on fishing boats, the very first thing I purchased for my job was rain gear. To be specific Grundens rain gear and I’ve been wearing that same gear over 25 years later. I am also using the term rain gear here loosely as this gear below is simply meant to keep you dry and warm when fishing in less than ideal conditions. The NRS gear linked below is not only reliable and comfortable gear, but also specifically designed for kayaks and walking through streams and river systems keeping you as dry and comfortable as you can be.

PLIERS

Kind of self explanatory, but pliers are a must have for a variety of different reasons, all of which tend to be answered by Kastkings KastKing Cutthroat 7.5-inch Braid Scissors and Pliers Set. I am recommending the combo set here because even thought he pliers themselves do cut braid, it is always worth have a pair of sharp braid cutting scissors and Kastking of course delivers the set, which is ideal for all (beginners, intermediate, and expert fishalots alike).  These pliers literally do everything from helping you tie knots, cutting your line, unhooking fish, tune your baits, crimp split shots, and open your split rings. This set literally does it all and if you want an additional fish lip grip, Kastking thought of that too in the additional bundle linked below.

Lip Grips and Nets

Jetty, bank, and beach fishing

Waders are an absolute must for bank or beach fishing when you are most likely going to enter the water in some form or fashion. The waders I linked here are light weight and breathable which allow you to walk great distances without fatigue in all weather conditions. These waders are also designed for sand and mud which means they do not have felt under the boots. Felt on the boots of waders are ok for stream fishing (but I’d recommend the korkers for any rocky streams or rocks in general), and no felt is really ideal for sand or muddy embankments.
