Why We Picked It:
The PENN Battalion Inshore Spinning Rod offers both PENN durability along with its proprietary SLC2 CARBON FIBER one-piece rod blank (that all just means a nicely wrapped graphite rod). The rod also offers an additional Fuji graphite reel seat that provides even more sensitivity for when you are retrieving lures. PENN also invested in the Fuji alconite ceramic guides to help the rod withstand rough treatment and weather conditions for both fresh and saltwater. To add even further sensitivity, this rod also features a high quality cork grip or ergonomic EVA handle that provides a comfortable grip during long fishing trips. PENN offers a wide variety of handle types in both cork and eva to ensure you can order exactly what you need for your fishing preference or fishing situation. Designed for true inshore fishing versatility, this rod is ideal for targeting a multitude of species North, South, East, West, Saltwater, and/or Fresh water.
What They Could Improve:
While the Battalion is a solid performer, I’d love to see a hook keeper for added convenience during transport and setup (my opinion is that in today’s day and age, every single rod should have a hook keeper, though they are easy enough to add yourself). These rods are made durable and with that durability comes weight, this rod is a little heavier than some of the other rods you will see listed in the intermediate and experienced fishing gear sections.
Compared to the Competition:
The PENN Battalion stands out in the inshore rod category for its robust construction and affordable price point. While some competitors might offer lighter or more specialized options, the Battalion excels in reliability and versatility, making it a great investment for beginners and experienced anglers alike. If you’re looking for an all-around inshore rod that’s both durable and high-performing, the PENN Battalion is a fantastic choice.
